Bartending has been a profession for almost as long as alcohol has been around (more about the history of alcohol).

Since the advent of alcohol thousands and thousands of years ago, the need for a place to gather and socialize became obvious. And so pubs and bars were born, and much later came nightclubs, discos and lounges. Manning (or "wo-manning' to stay politically correct) these establishments were bartenders, who, in short, tended the bar.

A bar tender is someone who pours, mixes, creates and serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from behind a bar. A bartender, sometimes called a bar tender, barman, barmaid, barkeep, barkeeper or tapster, however, does much more than just pour and serve drinks. In addition to the actual mixing and pouring of drinks, a bartender is expected to know a little about a lot of things, be engaging and able to hold a conversation, be entertaining, be a good listener, be able to make local recommendations in addition to remembering details about regular customers and their drinks.

It can be a very rewarding and profitable job or career to bartend. In North America, for example, where tipping is expected (usually 15%), a good nightclub bartender can make as much as $500 USD / night just in tips! Of course, this is not the norm. As a general rule of thumb, in a relatively busy establishment, be it a restaurant, bar, pub or club, bartenders can expect to make an average of $100 USD / night in tips. Keep in mind that bartenders are getting paid a wage as well - albeit usually lower than what the regular minimum wage is for the country. Get more info on bar tending salaries.
